The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport recently provides an update on the progress of the pedestrian bridge project across the Saigon River, which is sponsored by Nutifood.

The rendering of the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River features a design inspired by the nipa palm leaf. This design was created by the consortium of Chodai – Takashi Niwa Architects and Chodai Kisojiban Vietnam.
On June 5th, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport announced that it had recently chaired a meeting to evaluate the proposal for the pedestrian bridge project across the Saigon River, sponsored by Nutifood. Following the meeting, the sponsor will refine the proposal documents, which are expected to be submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee for investment approval in June 2024.
The pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River aims to begin construction on April 30, 2025, with a total investment of approximately 1,000 billion VND. The bridge’s design, inspired by the nipa palm leaf, was selected through a competition announced by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee in October 2023. The design was created by Chodai – Takashi Niwa Architects and Chodai Kisojiban Vietnam.
In December 2023, Nutifood signed a sponsorship agreement, committing to cover the entire construction cost of the bridge.
After signing the agreement, Nutifood selected a consortium consisting of Chodai & Kiso-Jiban Vietnam, Chodai, and Niwa Architecture to develop the project proposal and feasibility study for the pedestrian bridge. This consortium is highly specialized in designing complex architectural structures in Japan and won first place in the architectural competition for the bridge’s nipa palm leaf design, which was chosen by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.
All three companies in this consortium have extensive experience in architectural design, construction consultancy, and supervising the construction of numerous bridges and other structures both in Vietnam and internationally. Some of their notable projects include the Tran Hung Dao Bridge, Van River Overpass, Duong River Overpass, Can Tho Bridge in Vietnam, Iwagi Bridge in Japan, Neak Loeung Bridge in Cambodia, the Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir Highway, and the North Marmara-Odayeri-Pasakoi Road in Turkey…
The process for public acceptance and ownership:
The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has issued a process for the implementation and acceptance of construction projects funded by domestic organizations or individuals.
The process consists of four main steps: (1) Receiving sponsorship information and signing an agreement, (2) Preparing and submitting the investment proposal for approval, (3) Implementing construction, conducting inspections, and handing over the project according to the agreed timeline, and (4) Establishing public ownership of the asset. At each step, the city specifies the responsible parties, guiding agencies, and the timeline of the procedures.
Currently, Nutifood is in the second phase of the pedestrian bridge project, which involves preparing and submitting the investment proposal for approval. This proposal includes alignment with the city’s planning, project objectives, scale, location, investment scope, funding sources, and estimated total investment. Once the proposal is submitted, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee is expected to provide its approval within 15 days.
